The
New Haven Science Fair has two major divisions:
the
Biological Sciences and the Physical Sciences.
Projects must be listed in one category.
Biological
Sciences include behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, botany,
environmental sciences, medicine and health, microbiology and zoology.
Physical
Sciences include chemistry, computer sciences, earth and space sciences,
engineering, mathematics and physics.
Questions
are often received about which category a project should be in, for example;
“Testing different materials in shoes to
see the effect on a human’s running speed”.
Although
the measurement of the effect is a biological property, the scientific property
changed is a physical one.
It
is the science behind the cause/effect relationship that determines which
category a project is. If the scientific explanation is a biological process,
then the project must be categorized as biological.
A
project in a physical science category may still require SRC approval, since it
could be tested on a living thing.
Awards
are made to the top projects in each of the 6 age levels, subject categories,
and group categories, with a possible 60 regular awards being distributed. In addition, there are normally up to
30 special awards and prizes.
